宣教師が、ある侍に、神が如何に偉大で全知全能であるか熱心に語ったところ、その侍はこう返した。「あなたの言うとおり、神が世界を創造し、人類も神によって作られたなら、世界中の人間は最初からキリスト教徒でなければおかしいし、全知全能ならすべての人間を一瞬で教化することもできるはず。しかし、あなた達がくるまで日本にキリスト教など無かった。そして、今あなたは私を改宗させようと努力している。 これらは、世界の創造主、全知全能の神というあなたの信仰に矛盾してはいまいか？」と。宣教師は返す言葉が無かったという。その侍のいた藩では宣教師を手厚くもてなし、西洋科学を熱心に学んだが、キリスト教は華麗にスルーした。
